BIS QCO UPDATE FOR SMART METER MANUFACTURERS

OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a Quality Control Order pertaining to Smart Meters. These meters must adhere to the Indian Standard IS 16444 Part 1 and IS 16444 Part 2, and carry the Standard Mark under a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) license as per Scheme-1 in Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

This BIS Standard Notification Order is titled "The Smart Meters (Quality Control) Order, 2023" for various goods, as specified in a Gazette Notification dated 14 July 2023.

However, for Small Enterprises as defined by The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (27 of 2006), the order will become effective nine months from the date of publication of this notification.

This order is not applicable to the goods or articles manufactured domestically for export.

NOTE: Any person who contravenes the provisions of this Order shall be punishable underthe provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
