CONFORMITY ASSESSMENT & REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

Important update regarding Indian Standard applicable to all existing Licence holders/ New applicants/ manufacturers/ importers/ product sellers for the Electrical Appliances for Domestic Water Heating (Appliances for stationary storage type electric water heaters) (Quality Control) Order, 2024.

OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has recently issued a Quality Control Order, formally titled as the "Electrical Appliances for Domestic Water Heating (Quality Control) Order, 2024." This order is scheduled to come into effect six months from its publication date in the Official Gazette.

According to this directive, all electrical appliances designed for domestic water heating must adhere to specific quality standard as defined in the Indian Standard which is IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 21): 2018 (Appliances for stationary storage type electric water heaters). Furthermore, these products must display the Standard Mark, indicating compliance with these standards, and obtain a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, following Scheme-1 as outlined in Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

However, it's important to note that this order does not apply to goods or articles manufactured within the country for export purposes.

Furthermore, for micro enterprises, as defined under clauses (h) and (m) of section 2 of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (27 of 2006), this provision shall take effect twelve months from the date of publication of this notification.

Additionally, for small enterprises falling under the same clauses of the aforementioned Act, this provision shall take effect nine months from the publication date.

The certification and enforcement authority responsible for overseeing compliance with this order is the Bureau of Indian Standards.

Any individual or entity found to be in violation of these provisions will be subject to penalties as prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
