Freezers are covered under IS 7872:2020. The purpose of this standard is to establish minimum constructional and performance requirements for freezers. BIS adopted this standard after the mechanical engineering division council approved the draft.

This standard specifies the constructional requirements and the methods for determining the performance and volume of freezers, and it also specifies type tests for performance. This standard applies to freezers with storage volumes ranging from 50 to 1000 liters.

This standard requires freezers to be capable of maintaining a mean internal cabinet air temperature of 10 degrees Celsius or less at an ambient temperature of 43 degrees Celsius.

The freezer and its components must be built with enough strength and rigidity to withstand normal handling, transport, and usage conditions. When an interior light is installed, the lamp must be effectively protected from mechanical damage while still being accessible without undue disassembly.

When used in railway coaches or motor vehicles, the freezer and its components, including piping and pipe connections, must be designed to withstand high vibration and shock loads. Materials used in the cabinet's construction must comply with Indian standards wherever applicable unless modified by this standard. They must be free of flaws that could cause undue deterioration or failure.

Tests will be classified into three categories:

The Manufacturer shall provide a copy of the type test certificate with each freezer and certify that the freezer was manufactured in accordance with the type tested by the testing authority and that it complies with the requirements of this standard.

Each freezer must be permanently and legibly marked with the information specified in the standard in one or more locations. ISI certification marks may also be marked on freezers. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process during a visit to manufacturing premises.
