BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HDPE PP WOVEN SACKS
IS 14887:2014

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 14887:2014 for HDPE/PP Woven sacks for packaging of food grains.

HDPE/PP woven sacks for packaging of food grains are covered under IS 14887:2014. This standard specifies the requirements for woven sacks made of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/Polypropylene (PP) for packing food grains such as rice, wheat, pulses, millet and similar grains.

Based on the material requirements of HDPE or PP, there will be two groups for weaved sacks:

Group 1: HDPE woven sacks
Group 2: PP woven sacks

The sacks shall conform to requirements specified in the standard. The high density polyethylene or polypropylene used for tape must meet the requirements defined in IS 10146 or IS 10910. The tape must be made from virgin granules of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/polypropylene (PP).

The fabric used in HDPE/PP woven sacks must comply with IS 14887:2014. Sacks are made of tubular woven fabric and must be stitched at the bottom with two rows of lock or chain-type stitches. HDPE/PP tape or any other thread suitable for the purpose shall be used for stitching.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out for HDPE/PP woven sacks for packing food grains.

  • Dimensional test
  • Tenacity test
  • Heat shrinkage test
  • Breaking strength test
  • UV resistance test
  • Ash content and some others test

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

The printing on sacks shall conform to the requirements of IS 14887:2014. Printing, packing, and marking shall be done in compliance with the standards. Each HDPE/PP sack-containing bale may also be marked with a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
