BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STRUCTURED WALL PLASTICS PIPING SYSTEM
IS 16098 (PART 1):2013

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 16098(Part 1):2013 for a structured wall plastic piping system.

Structured-wall plastics piping systems for non-pressure drainage and sewerage are covered in IS 16098(Part 1):2013. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard IS16098 (Part 1) after the Civil Engineering Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Plastic Piping Systems Sectional Committee.

This standard specifies requirements for pipes and fittings with smooth external surface Type A in the field of non-pressure systems for underground drainage and sewerage based on PVC-U structured wall piping systems. It applies to PVC-U structural wall pipes and fittings with or without an integral socket, elastomeric sealing ring joints, or solvent cement welding joints. This standard applies to pipes and fittings with nominal outside diameters ranging from 110 mm to 1200 mm.

This standard's piping systems are resistant to corrosion caused by water with a wide pH range, such as domestic waste water, surface water, and ground water. Chemical and temperature resistance must be considered when using a piping system that conforms to this standard for chemically contaminated wastewaters such as industrial discharges.

The pipe shall be made primarily of polyvinyl chloride, to which only those additives necessary to facilitate the manufacture of components meeting the requirements of this standard may be added. All manufacturers of this product must adhere to the BIS-specified testing and inspection scheme. The statistical quality control method can be used to control product quality during production.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed.

  • Melt flow rate
  • Resistance to internal pressure
  • Dimensions of pipes and fittings
  • Oven test
  • Impact strength
  • Flexibility
  • Water tightness
  • Thermal stability

The pipes shall be marked with the information as specified in standard. The color of marking shall be such that it differs from the basic color of the pipe. Each pipe or fittings may also be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of a manufacturer's manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
